It's quite possible. If people these days rarely look past search results' first page, they might as well likely not look past AI-overview response. So getting there would improve conversion dramatically

Search Engine Optimisation and Generative Engine Optimisation can be done together, and much of the work overlaps. Good SEO helps search engines understand and rank content for people, while GEO focuses on making content easy for AI systems to interpret, trust, and potentially cite. In practice, clear structure, accurate information, strong technical foundations, and demonstrated credibility support both, so they are likely to converge rather than remain separate disciplines.

Not really — GEO and ChatGPT are game-changers, but they can’t fully replace SEO or Google.
Think of it this way:
SEO is like building a store in the right location — AI can decorate it, suggest products, or even run ads, but the store’s visibility still matters.
ChatGPT can answer questions fast, but Google still indexes the entire web and connects people to the best sources.
In short: AI enhances search and marketing, but the fundamentals of SEO and search engines aren’t going anywhere.

GEO is more of an evolution than a replacement, so I don't think it will take the place of SEO. While GEO concentrates on creating content that is sufficiently clear and authoritative for AI-driven search results, SEO continues to build the technical foundation and visibility.
These days, being understood and cited is more important than rankings alone. I recently came upon a fascinating article on attorney-rankings.com that provided a clear explanation of this change. The idea is to blend solid SEO principles with organized, purpose-driven content created for generative search.

Probably it helps to say Generative Engine Optimization in the question. Apparently some people think it is short for Geospatial. AI is said to use sycophancy (ask one Does LLMs use sycophancy), which means they try to please us and they might hallucinate a relationship between Geospatial Search Optimization and Search Engine Optimization, just to make us happy.
I had never heard of Generative Engine Optimization. I searched and I see that its purpose is to make content visible and reliable for AI by making content structured and other things. Traditional SEO is designed for use by people when searching.
The question I have is, can both be done? I asked Google Gemini:
And it said yes, that they can and should be done together. In other words, as Sarthak Varshney said, they'll blend together.

Honestly, sir, I don't think GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) will completely replace SEO anytime soon, if ever. It's more likely they'll blend together.
Think of it this way: SEO is all about making your content easy for search engines (like Google) to find and understand. GEO, which focuses on things like generative AI answers (like in ChatGPT or maybe Google's own SGE), is about optimizing for that specific kind of AI-driven result.

Great question! While GEO (Geospatial Search) and AI-powered tools like ChatGPT are certainly reshaping how we search and interact with information, it's unlikely that either will completely replace SEO or Google in the foreseeable future. Here's why:
1. GEO vs SEO: Different Focus
GEO (Geospatial Search) is about location-based search. It’s used to find information relevant to a user’s physical location (like finding nearby restaurants, stores, or events). While GEO is a valuable enhancement for local searches, SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is much broader. SEO focuses on optimizing content for ranking on search engines in a variety of contexts (local, global, informational, transactional).
GEO enhances SEO rather than replacing it. For example, local SEO involves optimizing for geographic queries, and GEO plays a crucial role in that. But SEO still covers a wide range of strategies, like content creation, backlinking, and technical optimization, that extend far beyond geospatial considerations.
2. ChatGPT vs Google: Complementary, Not Substitutes
ChatGPT and other AI-driven tools are transforming the search experience by offering conversational responses, summarizing information, and providing deeper insights. However, Google is still a search engine that organizes and indexes the entire web, providing access to a wide range of sources.
ChatGPT is a tool that can assist with specific tasks, but it doesn’t have the full indexing power of Google, nor does it provide comprehensive search results from millions of web pages. ChatGPT may answer questions directly, but Google will continue to play a crucial role in navigating the web, exploring diverse sources, and offering multiple perspectives.
3. SEO’s Role in a ChatGPT-Powered World
Even as tools like ChatGPT improve, SEO will remain essential. If businesses want their content to be discovered by AI tools like ChatGPT or in search engines like Google, they still need to optimize their content for visibility. While AI can generate responses, the data it uses to train and respond often comes from SEO-optimized content.
4. The Future: Integration, Not Replacement
AI and GEO technologies will likely continue to integrate into the broader SEO ecosystem, improving user experience by offering more personalized, location-specific, and conversational results. Instead of replacing SEO or Google, they will augment how we search and interact with information.
Conclusion:
GEO and AI tools like ChatGPT are enhancements to search rather than replacements for SEO and Google. The future will likely be a combination of AI, geospatial data, and traditional search engines, all working together to deliver more accurate, personalized, and context-aware results. SEO will continue to be important as long as there's a need to be found online!
