Lets me try to explain in a much simpler way. 

Whenever we make a program that is long running process, it is working synchronously that means all the work will be on the same thread that is used by your application.

 

When any long running process is called synchronously, your current thread will become unresponsive and user will not be able to interact with other controls in your application.

 

To overcome this situation async was introduced, when you make your program uses async, this will not depend upon your main thread and your UI will become responsive, so that user can interact with your application.

 

Await keyword is used to wait for the operation to complete that was called asynchronously.
