Trigger as the name suggests are DB objects which gets invoked against DB operation like Insert/Update/Delete. In most cases, we create trigger on DML operations (Insert/Update/Delete) however we can also create DDL trigger for example Login trigger. DDL triggers are mostly used by administrators.

Triggers are database objects which executes if any DML operations(Insert, update, delete) occurs in any objects(tables) in database. Let's take an example there is a Employee table where employees salary is stored. The employee go promotion and salary is hiked. We need to update the salary column value of respective employee. Suppose we want to see the employee salary history then how can we implement. Just create a trigger on Employee table on update and store the old and new value in Employee_Salary_History table.
