what is the maximum pool size in connection string

Yes, Ankit's right that there's a timeout period, whilst waiting for a connection to become available, the default being 15 seconds.

However, I've also discovered that both the maximum pool size and timeout periods are defaults and can be set to larger values in the connection string. I can't find any mention of an absolute ceiling for either though you should certainly be able to double them (to 200 connections and 30 seconds) without any problem.

The max pool size is 100. If we try to obtain connections more than max pool size, then ADO.NET waits for Connection Timeout for the connection from the pool. If even after that connection is not available, we get the exception.
"Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to obtaining a connection from the pool. This may have occurred because all pooled connections were in use and max pool size was reached" in your .NET client application.

Basically, when the maximum pool size has been reached further requests are queued until existing connections are closed and released back into the pool. Those connections are then used to satisfy the requests in the queue.

For SQL Server the maximum pool size is 100 connections.
