What is the difference between web application and website?

I think when you say about web site it may have some static information and it uses the advantages of the internet. I can be hosted without any supporting langaugs like php, java, asp.net. A plain HTML, css and javascript qualified to became a website.

when we talk about web application it mean for specific purpose and functionality which will be combined with specfic goal of functional in internet or intranet.
