What is reverse proxy

i like to know the concept of what is reverse proxy. is it related to IIS or is it related to any web server.

what is the objective of reverse proxy ? what it does.

please help me with adequate info. thanks

Consider the scenario, where you are having the REST api / Web API hosted on the server which isn't connected to the internet and you wanna expose those api to the world.

so you create another server that is connected to the outside network ( most cases internet) and on that server you have to configure URL Rewrite that would route the traffic to your secured web server.

so that your secured web server isnt expose to the internet.

One of the scenario is to setup the hybrid connection between your on prem and azure network through Azure Service Fabric reverse proxy implementation, where you can exponse your internal data to the services on Azure.

Port forwarding is the networking component working at the router level. Consider the scenario there is incomming request if its for port 80 or port 443 you may want to route the request to the web applicatoin server. If the request is for 1433 or 1434 you may want to route the request to the sql server.

you said -- web api is running in pc1 which is not connected to internet but p2 is connected. so pc2 will receive request from internet and forward that request to pc1 and pc1 will return response to pc2 and pc2 return response to outside. is it something port forwarding nah?

can you guide me how to implement it in home where i have two pc. say i will host my web api in IIS which is pc1 and pc1 is connected to pc2 in same network and pc2 is connected to internet.

please guide me with details and articles etc. thanks
