Cross Join is used for many to many relationship. Some times we need output like one row of one table is belongs to all rows of another table

at that time we are using cross join.

read below exmple it may help you to understand cross join concepts

Create table Teachers

(

TID int identity(1,1),

Name varchar(20)

)

Insert into Teachers (Name) Values('Dixit Panchal')

Insert into Teachers (Name) Values('Ketan Patel')

CREATE TABLE Students

(

stID int identity(1,1),

stName varchar(20)

)

Insert into Students (stName) Values('Manoj')

Insert into Students (stName) Values('Saroj')

Now, Every student belongs to every Teacher and every teacher belongs to every student

We need output like many to many relation as

Select TID,Name,stName from Teachers Cross join Students

Order by Name

In very simple terms, cross join is multiplication of two tables. Look at the following example:

There is sales table with State Id (such as Tamilnadu, Kerala, etc) and there is Product table with Product Id and there is State master with State Id and State name.

Now the requirement is a report all products sales in all states must be listed. If a product is not sold in a state it should show 0.

If you just use Sales table to generate the report the requirement of "If a product is not sold in a state it should show 0" will not be met.

So what you do is cross join between State table and Product table so that you will get all products for all states and then left outer join it with the sales table and then you will get the required output.
