what is COM?

COM is an abbreviation for the Component Object Model which is a model for creating software components which can be used by various programming languages. It was invented by Microsoft in 1993.

COM objects are usually written in unmanaged languages such as C++ or VB6.

However, .NET has an inter-operation layer which enables it to both consume and create COM objects. This is particularly useful when interoperating with Microsoft Office which exposes its programming interface as a system of COM objects, though Windows itself also contains various sub-systems which are COM based.

COM (and its variants COM+ and DCOM) are extremely complicated and for a more detailed overview I'd check out this Wikipedia article:
