Want career guidance please help

Hi,

Readers,i want to know how difficult it will be to shift from web to windows development.Due to some reasons i am being asked to work on windows application,i have 1 yrs exp in asp.net.I don`t know anything about windows development.

From career point of view is it a bad idea?

I never worked on Windows Forms much, more into Web development only. But my old Architect said, their wont be much difference in coding. Every where we implementing Object-oriented programming concepts and other coding standards, different n-layering Database interaction etc remains the same. The difference comes in UI related things only. Different controls and even their properties are similar to Web Controls. Like Vulpes reply, pick a book and start learning, post your questions here. In that case, I'd buy yourself a beginner's book on Windows Forms to see whether you think you can get into it.

Thanks for taking the time in studying my case. As it is the begining of my career which started with asp.net web development. For some reasons i am being told to work on windows application. Its a complex situation for me to decide as i cant quit my job immediately. So i need some advice please

It won't be an easy transition as Windows Forms and Web applications are 'chalk and cheese'.

Whilst in some ways Windows Forms development is easier (full access to the client machine, state management is a breeze) in other ways it's harder (controls are more complicated and the Win32 API and GDI+ are sitting beneath it all).

Also Windows Forms looks like it might eventually be supplanted by WPF not to mention the Metro UI and WinRT in the forthcoming Windows 8.

So, it's rather an uncertain outlook for desktop development at present.

On the other hand, it's never a bad thing in professional programming to have 'other strings to your bow' - it gives you more opportunities now and, in later life, the maintenance of applications using legacy technologies can be quite lucrative.

So, whether it's a good thing or not career-wise may simply depend on what alternative opportunities there are in Web development and whether the money is good enough to entice you to learn something new.
