Joe,

Lot of design patterns has been developed over time. Ideally You don't have to use all of these in one single project . DP depends upon project requirements .

Software design methods starts from understanding the requirements and convert them as UML diagram and then the coding phase will be started. The real challenge in software design is:
1.Understand the real problem
2. Choose a design pattern for this

If you are a developer you should focus on design pattern. Design patterns are predefined and proved solutions for the problems that are frequently faced in the software design. So you need to focus on Design Pattern. There are lot of online tutorial are available. Just Google or ping for that.
