Hi Harish,

Split is a better option as per your output. Because while spliting you just need spliter character. thats enough.

But while using substring, you should use some start index and length for each output,

ex : string names = "Ramesh;Kannan;Senthil",

If you using substring, you logic should be,

string name1= names.substring(0,6);
string name2=names.substring(7,6);
string name3=names.substring(15,7);

Think if it has 100 names, how you can write your logics.

lets simply do this in split,

var splitednames=names.split(';');
foreach(string name in splitednames)
{
Console.WriteLine(name);
}

As per your output split method is a better solution.

Now in this example
string sampleContent="Ramesh;Kannan;Senthil";
if i want to get output as below in 3 rows .

Ramesh
Kannan
senthil

Can i use either split or substring in this case to get output like this.

i am under impression that splitting or substrining is same in this case of output.

i can use split as you mentioned...but i also can use substring right...my limiting characters and priting in each line.

Hi Harish,

Split method

string sampleContent="Ramesh;Kannan;Senthil";
var splitedsampleContent=sampleContent.split(';');

Now the values are stored as array format in splitedsampleContent, ex : splitedsampleContent[0]=Ramesh,[1]=Kannan,[2]=Senthil.

Sub String

If you want to get sub string from string, use below code

string sampleContent="This is C# corner forum";
string subString=sampleContent.SubString(0,4) => 0 - start Index, 4 - length of string

The output will be "This"

If you want to get substring in array,

string sampleContent="Ramesh;Kannan;Senthil";
var splitedsampleContent=sampleContent.split(';');

var substring=splitedsampleContent[0].SubString(0,2);

the output will be "Ra"

Hi Harish,

String.Split splits a string into substrings based on a delimiter passed as parameter to it and returns an array of strings.

ex :
string str = "one,two,three,four";
string[] output = str.Split(',');
This code will split str based on comma(,) delimeter and returns an array of string.

Whereas String.Substring will return a fragment of an existing string . The substring starts at a specified character position and has a specified length.

ex :
string str = "Welcome to Csharp corner";
string output = str.Substring(11);
In this example the str.Substring will take the startindex as a parameter and returns a substring from starindex till the end of string. In this case output will be "Csharp corner"
Another overload will take startindex and length of substring.
