Query to select first and last row from unordered Table?

Best way as i think add a column said inserted date as DateTime and gets the last record and first record based on time. Make that columns default value GetDate(). So by default it will take system date

I don't know whether it's accicdental that the Name column is in alphabetic order but, if it isn't, you could also get the first and last records by changing ID to Name in Anthony's queries.

Or, you could do it in one query with:

SELECT

MIN(Name) AS [First Name],

MAX(Name) AS [Last Name]

FROM Emp

as I think I'm right in saying that MIN and MAX work with character based columns as well as numbers.

SELECT TOP 1 * FROM Emp ORDER BY ID asc

AND

SELECT TOP 1 * FROM EMP Order BY ID desc

If you mean your first row is ID 4 and your last 3 then there is no way, you need to insert them into some form of order
