porting apps?

I hope this is the correct forum to post this (please tell me if it isn't). When I first heard about VC#, I had the understanding that MS claimed that you didn't need to re-compile your apps to port them to a different platform ('cause of the .net framework). Is this true? If so how in the world would I install the framework on, say, Linux or Mac (No I'm a hard-core microsoft fan, but some of my customers might not be). Thanks much.

PS... I'm getting ready to rebuild my RedHat 8.0 box just so I can use it with Mono. I beat the heck outta my Linux installations (since I'm still (re)learning *nix) and generally trash-n-reload it periodically.

If you're running Mac OS-X and have unlocked the *nix features, Mono will run there too. You must have an X-Server installed.

Well, similar to Java, .Net apps can run on any platform where the proper runtime is installed. In Java's case, they have written the JRE to run on many different platforms which is why Java is so easily ported. To run .Net apps on non-Windows based platforms, you have to have a version of the .Net Framework installed. Currently, there is a project called Mono (by Ximian) that provides a Linux based version of .Net. To my knowledge, there isn't anything similar for Mac at this time.
