It is all about the innovation. when you see the HTML table, nothing to do with the programming. 
But when it comes to the programming language, you can call it as Grid control, it has many features and which helps the customers to do more function. 

Every customer has the induvidual requirement and as a product (Micorsoft ASP.Net) releases with the generic requirement. It does not mean that they stop you to customize or add more functionalities on top of it.

The developers can customize and can add more functionality on top of the existing controls but it may be time consuming, cost and testing efforts, most of the people prefer to buy the existing product.

Here, the microsoft may add these new features in the other plugins as part of the feature releases. At the same time you can add any new functional which customer looking in the market thats where again programming stuffs come here.

what ever you look in the other products like telerik, infralogistics, etc., you can develop by your own.

More over you need to note one thing. Can you realize difference between version to version in microsoft technologies year on year?

It is amazing to see the innovation and people moving towards innovation. The web page was built on .aspx page and there on you can see the improvement. JQuery (many client side libraries), Silverlight, WPF, Metro style apps, etc.., 

so programming is never ending process until computer and people live in the world. Because some people thinks like every where computerized and no need to develop anything. It is not true. Because what ever they have now may be outdated... need to do migration into new technologies. 

So no need to do worry about such things. Because they are doing programming and no body stopped you to do programming. All you need to do is start the programming and start the innovations....
