As cloud hyperscalers embed generative AI platforms, smaller expert consultancies are offering niche, flexible development. For enterprises in 2025, how do you weigh the trade-off between vendor lock-in with big players versus faster innovation and customization from specialist firms, and which choice has proven more scalable in practice?

Global / Generalist AI Partners: Large cloud providers (e.g. AWS, Microsoft, Google), big system integrators (Accenture, Deloitte, etc.), established enterprise-software vendors (Oracle, SAP), and perhaps large platform / foundation model providers. They tend to offer broad stacks, large compute, cross industry tools, large sales/partner reach.
Specialized / Boutique / Vertical AI Partners: Companies (startups or smaller firms) that focus on particular industries (healthcare, finance, manufacturing, retail), or on particular capabilities (computer vision, NLP, anomaly detection, domain-specific models, or data pipelines), or perhaps offering deep regulatory or domain expertise (“AI for legal”, “AI for pharma”, etc.).

Hi Mark !
Your question is really important. One of the articles I read recently https://www.multimodal.dev/post/generative-ai-consultants-vs-vendors-finding-the-best-fit-for-your-business
IMHO, large global AI vendors seem to be winning by scale and reach but keep in mind specialized consultancies often lead in innovation, flexibility, and faster customization.
