Digital currency is a broad term for any form of currency that exists only in digital or electronic form, while virtual currency is a specific, often unregulated, type of digital currency typically controlled by its developers. In simpler terms, all virtual currencies are digital currencies, but not all digital currencies are virtual currencies.
Digital currency
Digital currency is the umbrella category that includes all electronic currencies. Examples include:
Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs): A country's fiat currency issued and regulated by its central bank in digital form.
Cryptocurrencies: A type of digital currency that uses cryptography for security and is built on decentralized blockchain technology.
Virtual currencies: Unregulated and privately issued.
Electronic money (e-money): Funds stored electronically and used for transactions via prepaid cards or online accounts, within a centralized system.
Virtual currency
Virtual currency is a subset of digital currency and generally has the following characteristics:
Private control: It is typically controlled by its developer or a founding organization, not a central bank.
Unregulated: It operates with minimal or no government oversight.
Community-specific: It may be used within a specific virtual community, such as in online games, but can also be "open" or convertible to other currencies. Examples include gaming tokens and some cryptocurrencies.
