Difference between asp.net master pages and SharePoint master pages?

Master page concept is same in SharePoint and ASP .Net
More specifically in SharePoint:
The masterpage defines the design of your site, except for the application pages which are shared by all SharePoint sites in the farm.
Master page defines how your site looks like, Page layouts define how your pages look like.

The master page is used to define the parent layout of an application or website.
The layout is the part of the Master page, we define the layout in the Master page, apart from that we also keep content that is applicable to all the pages of the application or website in the master page (like header, footer, menu etc.).
