Contract VS permanent employee?

That term is not just in software development, but in every field of employment. Their difference in not just in the length of the contact or job you are going to get, but the difference is in other various areas as well. Such as,

Bonus and other offers you get from your employer
Any days off that you might get
Do you get more bonus every year
Is your feedback important?
Will they provide you medical, or other insurance services?
Do you get a push in your placing, such as do you upgrade as a manager from a junior, in 2-5 years?
Do you get time evaluation based on your own needs?

Many other similar questions arise, and then you can differentiate between the both of them. The margin needs to be understood between the pros and cons of both of these, in many cases, you should always consider looking forward toward the permanent job because they care for who you are and what you can offer them, also they have a good salary for you.

Where as on the other hand, contract base projects sometimes have a better chance for you, you get paid for what you do and you can select your own times to do the work. In simple words, Permanent jobs means, that you work for a company at their campus (or off the campus), and you get paid a base salary plus any bonus. On the contract project, you have the ability to chose your own time frames for work, you get to decide how you work and what you work for, and you have the ability to anytime cancel or divert from the project. But the payment is sometimes less.

As afzal said it is not in just software industry but in various employement either in private or government jobs. They will recruit for contract job when they get the new project for limited period of time. Especially microsoft do select employees for contract basis, The main reason for recruiting employees for contract basis than permanent is : They will give the less package for contract basis and takes the work to be done in less amount of time. They may be less increment for the employees.
