Change colors in datagrid

Hi All Definite newbie... Just playing around with C# and ASP.NET I've got a datagrid that shows info from a database. What I'd like to do is color the values in each cell depending on the content. eg: a value of "Good" shows up in green and a value of "Bad" shows up in red. Hope this is a simple thing. Phill

try using databinding here class myPage : Page { public string SetColor(string GoodBad) { switch(GoodBad) { case "Good": return "green"; case "Bad": return "red"; default: break; } } } put the following in your datagrid " .../>

What about if I have more than one column in the grid that I want to color? eg: field1 field2 field3 Item1 Good Bad Item2 Bad Good In this instance I want the Good/Bad in field2 and field3 to be green or red as appropriate. Thanks Phill

what you want to do is use the ItemDataBound event like so: private void dgYourGrid_ItemDataBound(object sender, System.Web.UI.WebControls.DataGridItemEventArgs e) { switch (e.Item.Cells[1].Text) { case "1": e.Item.Cells[1].ForeColor = Color.Red; break; case "2": e.Item.Cells[1].ForeColor = Color.Yellow; break; } } which will look at the value of Cell[1] (the second cell) and, depending on the value, change the color to one or the other.

The most you should do is set a css class attribute on the current html object based on data. Don't bloat your output with embedded style tags... or worse... old-school inlining of and
tags. CSS rocks and can do some amazing things. I highly recommend Jeff Zeldman's "Designing with web standards" book from New Riders publishing. Incredible book. Also, check out www.alistapart.com for some very interesting things you can do with css. For instance, the menu bar at www.chornbe.com is simply a CSS formatted

and everything else uses only very basic HTML. Use a browser that supports style switching and deactivating (like mozilla's Firebird, for instance) to see how light and thin your html should really be.
