If you have an array of datetimes the reason you need to initialize it is that the datetime object does not accept a date that is nothing.

reason being because no where was it specified what it was that needed to be initialized..i dont understand VB that well

No purpose at all, other than academic. AdmiralSpock didn't specify a data type that needed to be initialized, so I just chose two.

i can answer your question sort of my assignment in a college course is to create a program basically using arrays...unfortunately i dont understand what it means really to assign empty data to arrays....the professor i have didnt teach it so i had to come here and see if you guys could help me... now what she told me to do is create a procedure called initializearray() and it says: write a for loop to assign empty data to the arrays. You can assign the date to January 1, 1900. we are using date/time pickers in the program but i dont understand what she means by it...its fustrating for me to try and figure it out on my own...so i am kinda screwed for this program if no one here can help...

Arrays in .Net are zero based therefore you'd set up an integer value and loop using that value beginning with zero.
